What Should You Do When the Forklift Battery Stinks? - 2012-12-26 00:58:17

Is it possible that the battery forklift battery will smell like a rotten egg? Yes, it is quite possible. Forklift batteries are made from lead plates, covered in lead oxide paste, in a bath of sulfuric acid. When one of the cells in the battery stops accepting a charge while the charger stubbornly continues to charge the cell, hoping to bring the cell up to full voltage. And then the cell gets hot and starts to boil off the acid inside. After a while, the baked sulfuric acid will smell like rotten eggs.

Besides, if the battery is in an internal combustion forktruck or a car, it is possible for the alternator to be overcharging the battery and become the source of the rotten eggs smell.

Then what should you do if this situation arises? If it is a car battery, don’t replace your battery a second time. You should have your alternator checked when you replace your stinky battery. However, fork loader batteries are different to car batteries. They are bigger, heavier and more expensive. If your battery smells like rotten eggs while on charge, this is what you do. First, turn off the charger. Second, let it cool down. Third, do not reuse the battery. Fourth, call in a professional battery and charger company. Fifth, replace the defective cell or battery. And finally, check your charger is working properly

You might be puzzled at why the battery will fail. One of the causes can be the jarring of the forklift of the electric forklift on a rough, uneven floor. Constant jarring knocks the paste off the electric forklifts battery plates which cause them to short out prematurely. When the bottom of the cell fills with loose lead oxide shed from the sides of the battery plates, a circuit can be created to cause the battery cell to short out.

Another cause could be the quality of the water used to water the forklift battery. If the water added after charging the battery is full of dissolved minerals, those minerals will accumulate and make it difficult to charge the battery. And then the cell can overheat and send a bad-egg smell throughout the warehouse.
